Long-bracted Spiderwort
Tradescantia bracteata. Long-bracted Spiderwort is an eye-catching, spring-blooming native wildflower known for its deep blue to violet blooms and distinctive foliage. A likely favorite of early risers, it’s unique three-petaled flowers are open and on full display in the morning, but tend to close by early afternoon. Each flower cluster is held within a pair of long, leaf-like bracts—a unique feature that gives the species its name. Often found offering bursts of color in prairies, roadsides, and sunny gardens.
This hardy perennial prefers full sun and thrives in dry to medium soils, including sandy or gravelly sites with good drainage. Its low-growing form and drought tolerance make it well-suited for rock gardens, native borders, and restoration plantings. Supports a variety of pollinators, including native bees and hummingbirds. Grows 12-24″ in height.
