Side-oats Grama
When you picture an image of short prairie grass, Side-oats Grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) is probably what comes to mind. Short leaf clusters group at the base of the plant while stems grow upwards to 36″ in height. Distinct oat-like seed heads droop and appear to line one side of the stem giving Side-oats Grama its name and iconic look. Pale green leaves often turn deep red and purple in the Fall providing attractive foliage throughout the year.
An excellent source of habitat for many different insects, pollinators, and other wildlife.
Grows best in mesic to dry soil types in full sun. Deep root structures provide excellent erosion control and drought resistance. Grows 24-36″ in height.
