Description
Bebb’s Oval Sedge
Carex bebbii. Bebb’s Oval Sedge is fine, yet sturdy, clump-forming sedge suited to wet-mesic meadows, marshes, and low lying prairies. Blooms in late spring to early summer, producing dense, oval-shaped seed heads from which it derives it’s common name. Seed clusters start green and mature to a golden brown, adding subtle texture and seasonal interest to moist landscapes.
Thrives in full sun, but doesn’t mind some light shade, and in wet to seasonally saturated soils, including clay, loam, and even swampy, mucky soil. Forms tight bunches rather than spreading aggressively, which makes it a great choice for rain gardens, wetland edges, and restoration sites with borders. Bebb’s Oval Sedge provides excellent habitat for wetland insects and birds while helping to stabilize soil and filter runoff. Its deep roots make it an effective erosion control species, and its adaptability allows it to perform well in both natural and constructed wetland settings. Grows 12-36″ in height.
