Working with our native seed and plants team
Our native species ecologists research and discover unique species across the Midwest to bring high-quality, native grasses, sedges, and wildflowers to market. Our products are sourced from parent seed material from remnant prairies to be sure of the seeds’ genetic origin.
Native seed
MNL provides over 200 unique species of native grasses, sedges, and wildflowers. We hold a unique market position to be able to offer what is best available to meet project and budget goals. Our seeds are native to the upper Midwest and will perform well in the Great Lakes states.
We have created our line of signature seed mixes appropriate for a wide variety of site conditions across the Midwest. Our fulfillment team can mix any state or county-recommended mix, or we can create your very own custom mix.
Native plants
Our plant materials are started from our seed supply whenever possible, carefully recording plant origin. We can help you choose the best species for your site or we can work with a specific species list provided.
Our native plants are primarily available in 6-packs of 2×2.25×3” XL Plugs. We offer a variety of ways to purchase online, including expertly designed kits, full trays of individual species, and a Design Your Own Garden feature. We continuously grow a diverse portfolio of species to keep abundant inventory throughout the growing season.
Why choose native seed and plants?
Generations of agricultural expansion, urbanization, and industrial growth have significantly altered the natural landscape and habitats of Minnesota and the Upper Midwest. By reintroducing native plants into our landscapes, we not only restore biodiversity but also strengthen ecosystem resilience. Native species provide essential habitat and food sources for pollinators and wildlife, helping to reestablish and support complex ecological networks. Moreover, native plants are adept at conserving water, stabilizing soil, preventing erosion, and improving surface and groundwater supplies.
In addition to the environmental benefits, native plantings offer attractive, natural beauty to your property that will require substantially less time, work, and resources to maintain than traditional turf lawns and non-native landscaping.
