Here comes the cold!

When the weather turns cold and the prairies go dormant, a lot of our customers ask what they should be doing to prepare their plantings for winter. Luckily, the answer is – not much! We really like to recommend leaving prairie, wetland, shoreline, and woodland native plantings standing over the winter! The seeds left on the grass and wildflower stems provide much needed forage for our local wildlife. The dormant plant material provides great habitat for critters looking for a cozy spot to over-winter, or provide a perch for a bird passing through.

 

If it\’s been a while since your planting was established, you might consider overseeding with a flower heavy mix to add some more blooms to your project. Our Pollinator seed mix is a great option for sunny spots!
