It’s a good year for monarch butterflies!

August 16, 2018 by Bre Bauerly

Looking around outside, you may be able to spot more of these majestic creatures than you would have in previous years. We are observing that it has been a good summer for monarch butterflies around Minnesota! Walking around MNL’s native seed production fields this time of year when the migratory butterflies are hatching, is quite a sight!

Monarch butterflies here in Minnesota rely on milkweed plants (all native varieties) for the caterpillars to feed. Once caterpillars hatch into butterflies, they rely on a good variety of nectar plants. A native blazing star, meadow blazing star (Liatris ligulistylis) seems to be their absolute favorite nectar plant, with Rough Blazing Star (Liatris aspera) as a close second. Late summer/fall blooming plants are crucial for providing nectar/energy resources to monarch butterflies, and other migratory pollinators, as well as the native bees that will be hibernating over our brutal winters.

Stock up on high-quality nectar and milkweed plants with our native plant kits or our newly listed individual species (more to come, check back often!).) for sale in our shop!
